Mount Magazine is the name commonly used for the tallest mountain in the state of Arkansas and is the site of Mount Magazine State Park. The mountain is a flat-topped plateau with a sandstone cap rimmed by precipitous rock cliffs. Two peaks are situated atop the plateau, Signal Hill, which is often identified as the tallest point in Arkansas, and Mossback Ridge, which reaches 2,700 feet. Magazine Mountain sits in the midst of the Ozark National Forest in the Arkansas River Valley.

Mount McKinley, or Denali, in Alaska, is the highest mountain peak in the United States and in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,320 feet above sea level. Measured base-to-peak, it is the Earth's tallest mountain on land. The mountain is regularly climbed these days. Robert Tatum commented -"The view from the top of Mount McKinley is like looking out the windows of Heaven!" Five large glaciers flow off the slopes of the mountain. It is a centerpiece for North America.

Mount Saint Elias, also designated Boundary Peak 186, is the second highest mountain in both Canada and the United States, being situated on the Yukon and Alaska border. The mountain is a giant granite rock that was lifted above Earth’s crust during a period of tectonic activity that began over 60 million years ago. It rises abruptly some 18,000 feet from Denali Fault at its base to the higher, more southerly of its two summits. The upper half of the mountain is covered with snowfields that feed many glaciers, some surpassing 30 miles in length.

Mauna Kea is a volcano on the island of Hawaii. Standing 13,803 ft above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the U.S. state of Hawaii. However, much of Mauna Kea is below sea level; when measured from its oceanic base, its height is 33,500 ft -- more than twice Mount Everest's base-to-peak height. Mauna Kea is about one million years and formed by its volcanic eruptions. With its high altitude, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. Mauna Kea is a popular hiking and hunting area in Hawaii.

To see the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi River, you must come to western North Carolina. The highest, Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet, is part of the Black Mountain range. It was named for Elijah Mitchell, a professor of science at the University of North Carolina, who in 1857 fell to his death on its slopes. North Carolina tried to preserve the mountain’s environment by turning it into a state park, but its crowning fir forest continues to be ravaged by a deadly combination of air pollution and tree killing insects. This mountain is challenging hike and beautiful drive to the summit.

Many visitors to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are interested in seeing Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the "lower 48" states at 14,505 feet. However, Mount Whitney is on the east side of the Great Western Divide, a chain of mountains that runs north/south through the center of Sequoia National Park. Every year thousands travel to Whitney with their hearts set on attaining the summit of Mt. Whitney. To maintain the natural wilderness character of the hike and prevent overcrowding daily quotas for the Mt. Whitney trail during the peak season are put in place. Awesome Hiking!
