The state of Mississippi is located in the southern part of the United States. It borders Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama as well as the Gulf of Mexico. The state was named after the Mississippi River which is one of the largest rivers in the United States. The capital of Mississippi is Jackson City which is also one of the largest cities in the south.
Mississippi is most famous for the celebrities it’s produced and it is considered the birth place of Blues music. Elvis Presley and writers Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner were born in Mississippi as well as many well-known rock-n-roll stars of the 1950s and 1960s.
More than half of the state is forest area. There are twenty-two state parks in Mississippi all of which offer various activities for hikers, golfers, fishing enthusiasts and bird watchers. Those who enjoy mountain biking in the hills can find trails in most of the state’s parks. Mississippi's weather is extremely favorable to outdoor activities, espe-cially in the summer months when the state receives an influx of tourists many of which head for the state parks.
Because of the large forest area, Mississippi is a big lumber exporter as well as one of America's most important furniture manufacturers. In fact, the state is home to some of largest furniture manufacturing companies in the world.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers many areas for discovery. The hundreds of quaint towns that dot the state are rich in history and celebrate a strong blend of cultures and customs. Mississippi is one of the most laid back and resilient states in the Union.
The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico provide a climate that’s comfortable throughout the year. Tourists enjoy golfing, deep sea fishing and visiting the state’s famous museums.
