Kentucky - Unbridled Spirit
Kentucky is a state so enriched with interesting history and heritage, music and arts, sports and outdoors, there always seems to be a fun festival celebrating a Kentucky something or somebody.
The Kentucky Derby may be our best known event, but if you thought it was just a horse race— think again. The Kentucky Derby Festival, a multi-week celebration of the Kentucky Derby itself, offers festivities ranging from steamboat and hot air balloon races to marathons, celebrity events and the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks display.
Other cool Kentucky festivals include Owensboro's International Bar-B-Q Festival, London's World Chicken Festival, and the oldest bluegrass music festival in the state: Lexington's The Festival of the Bluegrass.
Experience all of the attractions you know about and discover all of those you don’t. We know what you’re thinking: Kentucky is all about bourbon and horse racing, right? Well, there’s no denying that fun things to do in Kentucky start with these storied attractions.
You can tour the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and get a feel for the Bourbon Country culture, not to mention taste what all the fuss is about. Travel through soft rolling hills of Horse Country and visit the Kentucky Horse Park for an intimate experience with past Kentucky Derby winners. Tour the hallowed grounds of Churchill Downs racetrack, or watch the action at a storied track like Keeneland.
However, Kentucky’s fun doesn’t stop with bourbon and horses. We’ve got a lot more exciting vacation ideas up our sleeve whether you’re on a romantic vacation, traveling with friends, or searching for fun kids vacations.
Play a round of golf on championship courses featuring scenic views and Appalachian Mountain backdrops. Taste the flavors of Kentucky vineyards in the state’s wine country. Discover sports attractions such as the Muhammad Ali Center and Louisville Slugger Museum. Or make a day out of upscale shopping, fine dining and art galleries at … well, almost anywhere!

The Civil War Sesquicentennial begins in 2011 and runs through 2015. Though Kentucky
was a slave state, it declined to secede from the Union making it “neutral” and literally
a state between the war. Kentucky’s northern border for more than 650 miles, the
Ohio River, marked part of the Mason Dixon Line and final stops on the Underground
Railroad. Both the CS and US regarded Kentucky as a must-have, and both exciting
and bloody conflicts happened here. Frankfort was the only “Northern” state capital
to be taken by the Confederates. Both presidents during this tumultuous time were
born in Kentucky, only 100 miles apart. For these and a variety of other historical
elements, Kentucky, part of the war’s Western Front, is rich with sites that mark
battles large and small; raiders’ paths; wealthy Confederate sympathizers who were
omitted from history books after the South surrendered and stunning reenactments.
