ILLINOIS - Worth a Visit!
Illinois makes a wonderful starting place for exploring America, not least of all because it contains one of the most exciting, beautiful and historic cities in the whole of the United States – Chicago.
With its stunning lakeside setting, Chicago offers the visitor a feast of delights. The very first skyscrapers were built here, and many of these Victorian beauties survive. A canal boat tour to view the architectural treasures of the city is a highlight of any visit.
A walk by the lakeside is an invigorating start to the day, and many local people will be out and about having their morning run, power walk, or simply a stroll with the dog. A visit to the Adler Planetarium, the Aquarium, or one of the many world class museums might be followed by an afternoon browsing the stores of the Golden Mile, where high end brand outlets rub shoulders with quirky and quaint arts and crafts shops.
And in the evening, the entertainment options are unlimited. Classical concerts and ballet from major national companies and orchestras, theaters, the best steak houses in the world and of course, nightclubs featuring traditional Chicago blues, are just some of the many treats in store for the traveler.
But Illinois is about much more than simply Chicago, glorious as that city is. It's famously the home of many Presidents, and you can follow the historical trails to learn about the origins of some of our most outstanding citizens and heroes. Illinois is the start (or end) of the historic Route 66 – the haunt of muscle cars and classic roadside diners and a road trip that many people feel is one of the “things I must do before I die.”
Illinois is also the starting point for exploring and sightseeing in the beautiful and intriguing Mississippi River country, with its many traditions and stories, not least of which is that of Huckleberry Finn. In fact, if you love the history of America, if you want to feel its beating heart, if you revel in the glories of the past and the promise of the future, then Illinois offers a giant helping of exciting experiences for the whole family to enjoy.
