From lakeshore sunsets and dune hikes to world-class museums and charming Main Streets, Michigan’s cities and towns balance scenic escapes with rich artistic heritage. Explore destinations where craftsmanship is celebrated, galleries spotlight local talent and culinary scenes rival the views. Whether you want to wander sculpture gardens amid lush greenery, savor Bavarian and Dutch flavors or step into museums filled with masterpieces, the Great Lakes State invites you to discover something meaningful in every season.

Grand Rapids’ Exceptional Arts Scene

A community of passionate creatives fuels Grand Rapids’ thriving artistic spirit. Each fall, ArtPrize – an international competition drawing artists from around the world – transforms downtown into a citywide gallery for nearly three weeks. Creativity is still on display year-round: Self-guided walking tours reveal more than 120 murals and sculptures scattered across the city center. Just beyond downtown, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park – named America’s best sculpture park by “USA Today” – features standout works, including bronzes by Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin. At the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the world’s first LEED Gold-certified art museum, explore collections spanning from Renaissance to contemporary art. To celebrate the city’s cultural diversity firsthand, plan your visit around events like the Grand Rapids Asian-Pacific Festival (June) and A Glimpse of Africa (August).

Traverse City’s natural beauty and culinary scene draw romance seekers and food lovers alike. This Northern Michigan enclave is known for rolling vineyards, crystal-clear bays and lush orchards. At Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, swim at Glen Haven Beach, paddle the Crystal River and watch the sun dip below Lake Michigan. For time on the water, sail aboard the Manitou, a replica 1800s schooner with Traverse Tall Ship Co. Sample crisp whites and bold reds at more than 40 wineries, and pick fruit in nearby orchards (it’s nicknamed the “Cherry Capital of the World” after all). Visit during the National Cherry Festival (July) or Traverse City Food & Wine (August) for foodie celebrations with local flavor. For a taste of the arts, catch a performance at the Interlochen Center for the Arts or wander Michigan Legacy Art Park’s wooded sculpture trails.

Dutch Culture & Downtown Gems in Holland, Michigan

With its small-town charm, lakeshore beauty and Dutch roots, Holland blends Old World heritage with easygoing Midwestern hospitality. Windmills, tulip gardens and traditional architecture nod to the city’s founding by settlers from the Netherlands, while attractions like Windmill Island Gardens and the authentically preserved De Zwaan windmill celebrate that legacy. Time your visit for the colorful Tulip Time Festival each spring or other cultural events that honor Dutch traditions through music, dance and food. Downtown Holland invites lingering among its brick-lined streets, independent boutiques, cozy cafés and art galleries. Just minutes away, sugar-sand beaches along Lake Michigan at Holland State Park and Tunnel Park offer dune climbs, unforgettable sunsets and iconic sights of the “Big Red” lighthouse – the most photographed in Michigan.

Bavarian Heritage & Family Fun in Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth honors its German heritage through Bavarian architecture, festivals and food, particularly the world-renowned family-style chicken dinners at Zehnder’s and the Bavarian Inn. The latter also has Michigan’s largest indoor water park (also Bavarian-themed). Just down the road, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland — the world’s largest Christmas store — is a year-round attraction stocked with thousands of ornaments, decorations and other festive goods. It even features an exact replica of the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. Every season, lively festivals celebrate everything from classic country to 1980s throwbacks, with highlights including June’s Bavarian Festival and September’s Frankenmuth Oktoberfest. Shop for souvenirs at the Bavarian-inspired River Place Shops or in boutiques along the flower-lined Main Street. Then take in the scenery on a Cass River boat cruise, uncover the city’s captivating public art using the Frankenmuth Mural Finder app or learn about the town’s storied history on a guided walking tour.
