Across the USA, soaring mountain ridgelines, rushing river currents and rolling coastal waves set the stage for unforgettable adventures. Whether you’re paddling on whitewater, hiking past geysers billowing with steam, skiing fresh powder or catching your breath in awe of the scenery, each corner of the USA beckons with must-do experiences. These thrills are the perfect places to start dreaming up your next trip.

Whitewater Rafting & Jetboats in Idaho

The Salmon River cuts through narrow canyons in central Idaho, shifting between calm pools and roaring rapids. Guided rafting trips can last a few hours or stretch across multiple days, with stops at gravel bars and forested bends to swim, sunbathe or camp. In spring, expect fast, cold water; by late summer, the current slows and the air warms. As the river heads west, it drops into Hells Canyon – the deepest river gorge in the USA. Here, take a tour on an expertly captained jetboat as it slices through churning waves beneath massive basalt walls. Keep an eye out for the occasional bighorn sheep or soaring raptor. Whether your travel is powered by paddle or motor, you’re in for some whitewater thrills.

Surfing in Hawaiʻi

Surfing in Hawaiʻi draws visitors year-round with warm water, steady swells and stunning tropical beaches. On Oʻahu’s north shore, winter waves can tower above 6 meters, drawing elite surfers from around the world to iconic breaks like Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay. People gather throughout the season just to watch the experts shred from the sand. In summer, calmer swells create space for beginners to take a lesson and ride smooth, glassy waves. Waikiki Beach is a popular spot for beginners. Beyond the surf, spend your days snacking on fresh poke, hiking through lush forests to panoramic views or swimming in a calm cove before settling in to watch a cotton-candy colored sunset above the horizon.

Hiking in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is the USA’s first national park, spanning parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. Take a short hike to witness the iconic eruption of Old Faithful (famous for its reliable timing), and stroll boardwalks over steaming hot springs like Grand Prismatic, all part of one of the world’s largest active volcanic systems. Beyond the geothermal marvels, Yellowstone is also rich in wildlife. Bison roam freely across the Lamar Valley, elk graze in open fields and wolves scamper across the landscape at dawn. Whether trekking to waterfalls, fly-fishing in backcountry rivers or soaking in the windswept grasslands and meandering animals, Yellowstone inspires awe in every direction.

Rock Climbing the New River Gorge

Long known within the climbing community, the New River Gorge in West Virginia has earned a broader spotlight since becoming a national park in 2020 – and for good reason. Towering sandstone cliffs line the gorge for kilometers, featuring thousands of established sport-climbing routes that range from beginner-friendly to expert-level. And you don’t need to be a seasoned climber to get started here; local guides provide gear and instruction for first-timers. Between climbs, you’ll find wooded trails, river views (and whitewater rafting!) and plenty of space to slow down. Climbing here is as much about the scenery as it is the thrill.

Winter Sports in Utah

Utah’s skiing and snowboarding season is long and legendary, with dry, powdery snow falling across the Wasatch Mountains from late fall into spring. Resorts near Salt Lake City offer fast access to varied terrain: open bowls, steep chutes, smooth glades and long groomers. Alta and Snowbird cater more to advanced skiers, while Brighton and Solitude offer a more relaxed and local vibe. Park City spans wide-open terrain and connects directly to town. Lift tickets and gear rentals are reservable across most Utah resorts, so it’s easy to plan ahead and maximize your time on the mountain.
